4 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast

1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)

½ cup sugar

½ cup unsalted butter, melted

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for filling)

½ cup brown sugar (for filling)

½ cup chopped nuts (such as pecans or walnuts, optional for filling)

½ cup dried fruit (like cranberries or raisins, optional for filling)

Egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water)

Instructions
 

Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let sit until frothy, about 5-10 minutes.

    Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. In another bowl, whisk together the melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and activated yeast mixture. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a shaggy dough forms.

      Knead: On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and allow it to rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.

        Prepare the Filling: In a separate bowl, mix together the brown sugar, ground cinnamon, chopped nuts, and dried fruit (if using). Set aside.

          Form the Star Bread: Once risen, divide the dough into four equal pieces. Roll out the first piece into a circle (about 12 inches in diameter). Sprinkle a quarter of the filling evenly on top. Roll out the second piece and place it on top of the first, repeating the filling process. Continue stacking the third piece with filling, and place the final piece on top without filling.

            Shape the Bread: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into 16 equal sections (like slicing a pizza, but stop about 1 inch from the center). Twist each section outward to form “points” of the star.
