Ingredients

1 loaf of challah or brioche bread, cubed

8 large eggs

2 cups milk (preferably whole or 2%)

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup maple syrup (for serving)

1 cup mixed berries (optional, for serving)

Instructions

Prepare the Bread: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cubed challah or brioche bread with a sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg. This helps to coat the bread with additional flavor.

Mix the Custard: In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined and slightly frothy.

Combine: Pour the egg mixture over the cubed bread, ensuring that all pieces are saturated. Gently fold the mixture to evenly distribute the custard.

Overnight Chill: Cover the mixture with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight (at least 8 hours). This allows the bread to absorb all the flavors and become perfectly soft.

Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the casserole from the fridge, uncover, and let it sit at room temperature for about 15-20 minutes.

Bake the Casserole: Place the casserole in the oven and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

Serve: Once baked, let it cool for about 5-10 minutes. Slice into squares and serve warm drizzled with maple syrup and topped with berries if desired.
