Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon sugar

1 cup warm water (approximately 110°F)

2 tablespoons olive oil (plus more for cooking)

Optional: herbs (such as rosemary or thyme), garlic powder, or cheese for flavor

Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar until well combined.

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the warm water and olive oil.

Mix the ingredients with a wooden spoon or spatula until a sticky dough forms. If you’re adding optional herbs or cheese, mix them in at this stage.

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead gently for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle a little more flour as needed.

Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.

Heat a non-stick skillet or a heavy-bottomed pan over medium-low heat. Add a little olive oil to coat the bottom.

Once the skillet is hot, flatten each ball of dough into a disc about ½ inch thick and place it in the skillet. You may need to work in batches depending on the size of your skillet.

Cook the bread for about 4-5 minutes on one side until golden brown, then flip and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes on the other side. Adjust the heat as necessary to prevent burning.

Remove the bread from the skillet and place it on a plate covered with a kitchen towel to keep warm and soft. Repeat with the remaining dough.

Serve your stovetop bread warm, optionally brushed with more olive oil and sprinkled with salt or fresh herbs.
