Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup warm water (110°F)

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs (optional)

1 egg (for egg wash)

Sea salt (for sprinkling)

Fresh herbs (such as rosemary or thyme) for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Activate the Yeast: In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

Make the Dough: Add olive oil, salt, and half of the flour to the frothy yeast mixture. Mix well. Gradually add the remaining flour until a dough starts to form. You can use a stand mixer with a dough hook or your hands.

Knead the Dough: Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Shape the Breadsticks: Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 10-12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into long strands (about 10-12 inches). Using two strands, twist them together to form a 'heart' shape. Pinch the ends together to secure.

Prepare for Baking: Place the heart-shaped breadsticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover them with a towel and let rise for another 30 minutes.

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Egg Wash and Seasoning: In a small bowl, beat the egg and brush it over the risen heart-shaped breadsticks. If desired, sprinkle garlic powder, Italian herbs, and sea salt on top for extra flavor.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Let cool slightly before removing from the baking sheet. Optionally, garnish with fresh herbs. Serve warm with marinara sauce or garlic butter.
